Fire Safety in Your Home
12/9/2022 (Permalink)
Keeping your home safe from fires is a universal concern. When you consider that over 3,800 people died in house fires in 2021 alone – the concern is well founded. Fire safety guides stress following the Three P’s Principle. Prevent, plan and practice are the three principles and when applied can reduce the chance of a house fire. Simple fire prevention measures such as safe cooking practices, fireplace and chimney care; as well as keeping an eye on candles and proper use of extension cords. Proper smoke detectors are a must and should be placed throughout the home to offer prompt notice of smoke or fire. Planning efforts include keeping certified fire extinguishers in the home and maintaining them regularly. Also make an escape plan and PRACTICE it with your family members so as to ensure that if a fire does occur; all family members will know exactly how to get out and where to go when safe. Draw a floor plan of your home; mark two fire escape routes for each room. Pick a safe outside place to meet after escaping from a fire. Practice a low-crawl escape from your bedroom. Try it with your eyes closed to see how well you could do in thick smoke. This should also apply to pet safety as well – get your pet out along with your family. Remember; material things can be replaced – lives cannot.
